DC residents and community leaders hosted the 6th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Peace Walk in Washington DC. On its 35th year, this year’s Dr. King’s birthday celebration was a Peace Walk that extended about a mile on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in the South East part of the city. Hundreds walked in the Peace Walk remembering the Civil Rights leader that would have turned 84 years old on this celebration. This year’s celebration is particularly meaningful because the official federal holiday celebrating Dr. King’s birthday falls on the day the first African American President, Barack Obama, is sworn in as President of the United States for a second term.

The Peace Walk also included a Rally, where Civil Rights leaders, celebrities, and community leaders spoke, many from across the nation. Amongst attendees to the Peace Walk and Rally were DC Mayor Vincent Gray, Nick Cannon, Dick Gregory, and DC Senator Michael Brown. Some of the organizers, including Lisa Shaw, Keith Silver and Denise Barnes, met at the United Black Fund building in South East Washington months ahead of event in preparation for a successful Peace Walk.
