The DC area closed Hispanic Heritage month with the first Dominican Fest in the DMV. The event organized by locals, including Colombian publicist Cristina Fandino, and Dominican journalist Kenia Basillis, brought Dominican culture to the DMV. There was food, entertainment, dancing and lots of music. Renowned merengue band Oro Solido was the main music attraction at the festival. Founded by Raul Acosta in the early 90’s, Oro Solido is currently on a world tour celebrating its 30th anniversary. The event attracted more than 5000 attendees at the Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring, less than a mile from the Nation’s Capital. In addition to food, dancing and music, Fest goers were able to play a game of dominoes, enjoy the many cultural musical acts on stage, and have a tour of the art exhibit by Dominican-American veteran artist Carmen Torruella-Quander, showcased throughout the festival. Local politicians, including those of Dominican background (Maryland State Delegates Joseline Peَña-Melnyk, Deni Taveras) attended event. The event was free and open to the public. With over 2 million people in the US, according to census 2020 data, Dominicans are the 4th largest Latino group in the nation, and the DMV is home to more than 35,000 Dominican-Americans.
