On March 24th, 2018, hundreds of Washingtonians held a pre-March rally at Folger Park in southeast DC. The rally was attended by youth, elected officials, and activists calling for common sense gun control. The event was held a few hours prior to the national March for Our Lives march scheduled to take place in Washington DC and across many cities in the nation. The march was organized by survivals of the high school mass shooting in Parkland, Florida that claimed the lives of 17 people. The students have been very vocal about the need for gun control nationwide, including more strict background checks, and increasing the age limit for those who want to buy guns to 21. DC has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation, but DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton believe similar laws are needed nationwide to prevent illegal guns from ending up in DC streets. Both attended the DC March for Our Lives event.
